Putting it all out there.
Periodically I am called to lay it on the line, divulge the freaky (magical) contents of my closets. It feels cathartic and it’s my way of calibrating where I’m holding myself back in my life.
Sometimes if feels as though I have two lives. There’s the professional conventional me, who reads business marketing books by Seth Godin & gets credentialed through the International Coach Federation. And there’s the intuitive unconventional freaky (magical) me who reads Carlos Castaneda & channels spirits through Medicine Cards.
(In fact, my Left brain uses the term “freaky” but my Right brain likes the more creative “magical”. So I’m blending the two, to give them equal representation.)
Over the years I have walked my own Heroine’s Journey to reconcile these two sides of me. And I can say that mostly they are at peace. I credit my brain integration (a strong Right/Left brain balance) as a gift.
But every now and then they start to drift, one feels suppressed by the other, and I have to take action to bring them back into harmony. A few weeks ago I began having battle dreams, one after another, dreams about great wars, taking sides, winning & losing. They were making me fiery and ferocious in waking life.
After the sixth or seventh in a row, it was time to contact my favorite Jungian dream analyst, David Bedrick, author of Talking Back to Dr. Phil (a great book that you should read). He helped set me straight.
Returning the Conventional and the Freaky (Magical) back to harmony.
David Bedrick helped me to understand that I wasn’t honoring my intuitive side enough. My spirit was feeling suppressed, hidden, rejected by that intellectual side of me that strong-arms my work.
Have you ever felt this in your own life? We all go through it.
I have a voice that says, “You can’t be entirely authentic because your clients will think you’re a freak.”
Ah, the gremlin voice that so badly wants to keep me small, because that’s where it thinks I’m safe. But then the next voice breaks through that says, “Safe is BORING. Safe is not me. I don’t want to be safe and small, and that’s the last thing my clients need from me.”
Let the Freak Flag fly.
And so here I am, getting real, owning my authenticity while detaching from the outcome.
We can’t create a big impact if we’re not willing to show the world who we are. We can’t please everybody and if that’s the goal, we’ll show up with such neutral vanilla-ness that we won’t actually interest anybody.
So here they are.
The 5 things about me you might find freaky (magical).
1.) I believe that the Universe is both outside and inside of us, and I’m co-writing a book on the subject with Nina Brown. (The Fascinated Observer: A Guide to the STAR Philosophy)
2.) I am shamanic. Shamanism is about bringing all things into harmony using Nature as our primary teacher. I have been shamanic/totemic my entire life. I was born with this worldview and I attribute it to my Cherokee blood, though I was not raised within the Cherokee nation. I have formally studied with four shamanic teachers. I am also currently formally enrolled in Alberto Villoldo’s shamanic training through the Four Winds Society. I’m excited because I know it will provide an incredible flourish to my Transpersonal Coaching practice.
3.) I spent 20 years in the field of veterinary medicine and when I left it, I was so burned out I
nearlywent mad. It was also the best thing that ever happened to me. Through the darkness of that time I connected to my wholeness, my humanity and I also found my way back to my spirit. It’s been said that you have to lose your mind to find your sanity. I’m a walking testament to the truth of that. I believe it’s what powers my work. When I left my veterinary career I had a psychic opening. (A Right brain shift.) All of it became more intense. (Read about my experience in Stark Raving Zen: A Memoir of Coming Alive)4.) I’m a lucid dreamer and an astral projector. I’m intuitive and telepathic. I am clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairsentient, & claircognizant. I believe every one of us has at least one “Clair” even if it’s not entirely developed. I also believe we need to stop being so dramatic about it, stop calling it woo-woo, leave the crusades behind, and own the fact that we have more than five senses. Like every other animal in nature does.
5.) I am animistic. I believe that everything is alive and everything has a spirit. I believe that we can receive messages from everything if we only attune to its vibration. Trees can give us directions, spiders can teach us how to retrieve lost parts of ourselves, and mountains can infuse us with the strength we need to navigate a difficult transformation.
Take me as I am.
So there is the open door to the parts of me I don’t always bring forward, as foundational as they are to my identity. As my journey winds deeper into book-writing, I find that I can’t help but be totally open and authentic in my own story-telling. All of this guides me to help those people who are currently in their own search for authenticity.
The concept of non-attachment/non-judgment is my primary teacher right now. The lessons I’m receiving are rich and transformational in my own life. I’m trying hard not to judge myself when I fear putting it all out there. I’m trying not to fear the judgment of others.
Questions to ask yourself:
- Have you thought about the unique things about you that you’d like to admit fearlessly and shamelessly?
- Maybe some things you don’t actually understand, yourself?
- What are you keeping hidden in the recesses of your safety zone?
- What is asking to be free?
I invite you to take a minute and write your own list, even if you have no intention of sharing it. And if you would like to share it, please put it in the comments! There is nothing I’d love to read more than that.
Much Love,
Kristy
